There are a few 8th grade teachers piloting Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) at the Middle School level. Please keep in mind
We are not asking that your child bring in the family laptop or tablet. We are allowing them to use devices that they already bring to school such as a Smartphone, iTouch, Kindle Fire, Nook Tablet, iPad etc...
It is not required for them to bring one in, but we feel we can interact educationally with students on devices they already use. There will still be computers available for the students to use in the classroom.
Students will have a set of rules they have to follow to use the devices. They will be instructed what to use and how to use it. They will not be listening to music and texting friends.
We will not require the students to download “paid apps”
Red Zone versus Green Zone
“Red Zones” refer to places and times when students are not permitted to use their device. Your device is never permitted for use in the hallways or common areas of the school. These areas will always be “Red Zones.”
“Green Zones” refer to places and times when they are allowed.
Rules
If you are in a “Red Zone” the rules below do not apply as phones, iPods, iPads, laptops, etc. should not be out. If you are in a “Green Zone”:
RESPECT: Other teachers may have their own rules. If they don’t allow devices, respect their decision.
Bring your device charged and ready for class along with a pair of headphones.
When devices are in the classroom, they will be placed at the top of the desk and students will not use the devices unless directed.
This is a privilege not a right. As easily as this opportunity can be given, it can be taken away just as easily if expectations are abused.
The goal is to use these devices to enhance and engage you as a learner. Please do not use your device to distract yourself or others.
Texting is off limits and grounds for having your device removed from the classroom. You have all night to text your friends. Give me one hour!
