College Prep English 10 focuses on helping students become more confident, independent readers, writers, and thinkers. Throughout the year, students will read a range of literature and nonfiction while practicing how to identify central ideas, analyze an author’s choices, use strong textual evidence, and communicate their thinking clearly.
Major units include short stories and poetry, Fahrenheit 451, Antigone, Born a Crime, and coming-of-age book clubs. Students will complete a variety of writing and speaking tasks, including literary analysis, argument writing, personal/narrative writing, discussion, debate, and Socratic seminar.
Because 10th grade is an MCAS year, students will also receive regular practice with the reading, writing, and test-taking skills assessed on the English Language Arts MCAS. These skills are built into the course throughout the year, with additional focused preparation before the exam.
