Research Unit

Over the course of this five-week unit, students will conduct independent research on a controversial “teen topic” (see options below). Students will review note-taking strategies and focus on avoiding plagiarism and using MLA formatting. The unit will culminate with creating an objective infographic presentation of their findings, and writing a letter to a local representative arguing for a specific remedy to the issue.

Topics may include:

  • The drinking age should be lowered to 18.

  • Schools should arm selected teachers with handguns to protect students.

  • The state should get rid of all standardized test requirements for graduation (MCAS).

  • School should only be allowed to teach abstinence (no sex until marriage) in sex education.

  • Contact sports (such as football and hockey) should be banned for children under 16– it’s too dangerous for the developing brain.

  • There should be strict limits on smartphones and other portable technology for those who are under 18.

  • Homework should be banned from schools – it causes too much stress.

  • Violent video games should be banned for anyone under 18yo – it can cause violent thoughts/behavior.
