Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is an approach to research that recognizes that teaching and learning are serious intellectual work. Faculty working in the scholarship of teaching and learning inquire into improvements in teaching and learning and disseminate those findings through conferences and publications. The International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is one of the main professional organizations promoting this type research. Most academic disciplinary organizations also support journals focused on teaching and learning research in that discipline.

The natural and physical sciences have been at the forefront of the scholarship of teaching and learning. If you are interested in a brief introduction on how to conduct research in teaching and learning, you may wish to view this half-hour video by Dr. Matthew A. Fisher at Saint Vincent University.
