First Steps For New Faculty

Once you have signed and returned your contract, there's a lot you need to do.

First, you will receive an initial email to your primary non-New School account from Human Resources with step-by-step instructions for processing your new appointment and alerting you to a follow-up Welcome email with a number of forms attached, including a Personal Data Sheet, Statement of Computer Usage and the form 195.1. Complete and return the Personal Data Sheet and and Computer Usage Agreement as soon as possible so that staff in Human Resources can generate a New School ID number for you.

This will also create your @newschool.edu email address. You should receive a message sent to your personal email account with instructions on how to access your New School email account. If you do not receive this email within five working days, please contact Human Resources and your college-based administrator. Once your New School email is issued, all official correspondence will be sent there.

Next, you will need to complete your new faculty payroll paperwork or, if you are an international faculty member, complete your visa paperwork, get a social security card and then complete the new international faculty payroll paperwork. All new faculty payroll paperwork must be done in person, so it cannot be completed until your come to New York City.

There are also many things you need to know if you are moving to New York City. If you have not previously worked or taught in the United States, you may also want to review the 'taxes and withholding' information along with information on teaching in the U.S. available here.

Once you have completed your payroll paperwork and have received your New School N number and email address, you will need complete three online trainings. If you have not previously worked in higher education in the U.S., you should review information about the privacy of student records and the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). You will receive an email from Workplace Solutions to complete the other two courses within the first week of employment: Preventing Discrimination and Sexual Violence Plus, and Unlawful Harassment Prevention.
