TESOL Methods Language Support Training

We are pleased that so many New School faculty are actively seeking the skills and support that can strengthen their teaching practice particularly with the non-native English speakers in their class. We hope you can participate in one of the TESOL Methods Language Support** trainings:

1. TESOL METHODS INTENSIVE FOR FACULTY, 5 days, 33 hrs.

Trainings are offered in January and June.

The TESOL Methods Intensive for Faculty includes five sessions that explore pedagogical techniques and best practices for teaching English Language Learners. Classes cover syllabus development, lesson planning, and practical strategies that can be used to support international students across disciplines and in a variety of class types. You’ll be able to share your experiences in a supportive environment with other New School faculty. Details about the Intensive are available here. The training also counts towards the Certificate in Teaching English, which you can learn more about on The New School Certificate in TESOL website here.

All five sessions are required.

Registration opens approx. 6 weeks prior to course through an announcement from the Provost Office, Faculty Development Office.

2. TESOL METHODS TOOLKIT FOR FACULTY, 2 days, 8 hrs.

Early in fall or spring semester. Dates TBD

The TESOL Methods Toolkit is an intensive weekend workshop focused on best practices for teaching non-native speakers. The course will equip you with techniques, ideas and resources to support classrooms with both non-native and native speakers. These strategies are designed to elicit the richest classroom experience possible for all. This training is offered for faculty who cannot commit to the longer 5- day TESOL Methods Intensive offered in January and June.

Registration opens approx. 6 weeks prior to course through an announcement from the Provost Office, Faculty Development Office.

3. METHODS AND TECHNIQUES IN TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS

NELT 0411 Theresa Breland

A | 15 sessions | Wednesdays, 7–9:45 pm | every fall and spring term

A course in the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CTE). It is open to the public and addresses a wide variety of contexts (while the January Intensive focuses on supporting students in a university context), but NS faculty have also enrolled in this version when the intensive format was not possible for them. As NS faculty, you may use your regular New School course to fulfill the teaching requirement. You can take this course on a tuition waiver.

Contact Caitlin Morgan, morganc@newschool.edu, if you are interested in pursuing this option.

4. CERTIFICATE IN TESOL (CTE)

Faculty who have completed one of the above trainings may want to take more courses towards the Certificate. The TESOL Methods Intensive counts as the Methods and Techniques course in the Certificate. There are four additional courses that faculty may take using tuition waivers:

· English Grammar for ESL Teachers

· Teaching the Sounds System of English

· Assessment in the Language Classroom

· The Teaching Practicum

For any questions about these training opportunities, please contact Caitlin Morgan, Director, English Language Studies, morganc@newschool.edu, 212.229.5372 , 66 W.12th Street, 6th Floor

**Language Support at The New School

The Language Support Initiative is a faculty development model comprised of two main components: a set of flexible pedagogy training options and a community of faculty and administrators at The New School, the “Language Support Collective.” This capacity-building initiative is dedicated to promoting Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) best practices and pedagogies, with the ultimate goal of supporting the academic experience of non-native English speakers and creating the most effective learning environment for all learners in our New School class.
