Leadership
The Faculty Professional Development Network aims to provide resources and support to faculty taking on new leadership positions such as program director, chair, associate dean or dean. This area will grow and expand as new resources are identified and developed. New chairs are encouraged to read The Essential Department Chair: A Comprehensive Desk Reference published by Jossey-Bass. Faculty interested in the leadership dynamics of higher education in the United States may also wish to review Reframing Academic Leadership, an excellent resource for new academic leaders. We have created a small but growing Leadership Development Library and also provide links to online resources.
You should also be aware of a number of organizations concerned with higher education more generally; they are excellent resources. The Chronicle of Higher Education offers a daily newsletter and afternoon updates as well as a website rich in resources. Inside Higher Ed also provides a daily newsletter in your in-box along with news, opinion, webinars and job listings. There are also a number of organizations and companies supporting faculty in leadership and supervisory positions, including Academic Impressions, which offers many free resources including webcasts, recordings and articles and a leadership library. EDUCAUSE is a non-profit association dedicated to the advancement of higher education through the use of technology. And the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society can also serve as a resource for academic leaders.
