New Faculty Support Program

The New Faculty Support Program is a cohort-based, peer support program that consists of a one-day intensive orientation just before the start of the semester and a series of workshops through your first academic year that introduce and explore various aspects of faculty life. You will participate in peer-to-peer classroom visits and will also be paired with a master teacher for a classroom visit.

The New Faculty Orientation is an academic orientation to the university including an introduction to the unique history of The New School, faculty panels, an introduction to resources to support your research and creative practice, and a campus tour.

The academic year Workshops introduce you to the science of learning and different approaches to teaching and learning, including embodied learning; support for your research and creative practice, including grants support; information on how to support the success of your students and the resources available to you and them, and help to address work-life issues, all while considering issues of inclusion, diversity, and social justice.

We also strongly encourage new faculty, whether junior or senior, to request a mentor through our Colleague to Colleague Mentorship Program. New faculty often feel they don't need a mentor, sometimes saying that they'll ask for help when they need it, they don't want to be pinned down, they don't have time. Make the time. Research shows that you'll do better professionally, socially and personally if you participate in a formal mentorship program. It is a "powerful predictor of 'good starts' for new faculty."
