Definitions:
Personalized Learning seeks to accelerate student learning by tailoring the instruction to an environment—what, when, how and where students learn —to address the individual needs, skills and interests of each student.Students can take ownership of their own learning, while also developing deep, personal connections with each other, their teachers and other adults.
In order to accomplish quality personalized learning, there needs to be a mixture of project-based, competency-based, individualized instruction, and mini-lessons:
Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge.
Competency-based or Proficiency-based learning refers to systems of instruction, assessment, grading, and academic reporting that are based on students demonstrating that they have learned the knowledge and skills they are expected to learn as they progress through their education.
Individualized instruction is a method of instruction in which content, instructional technology (such as materials) and pace of learning are based upon the abilities and interests of each individual learner.
Mini lessons are short lessons with a narrow focus that provides instruction in a skill or concept that students will then relate to a larger lesson that will follow. A mini lesson typically precedes reading workshop or writing workshop, but it can serve as an introduction to a social studies, science, or math lesson.
