Unlike most other ancient civilizations due to its lack of fertile plains (or rivers), the Greeks more than made up for it with their many harbors along the Peloponnesian peninsula. Athens (considered the birthplace of democracy) and archrival Sparta (military-like society) highlighted how educated, yet strong, the city-states of ancient Greece were. Then along came a fellow by the name of Alexander the Great, and a period of time known as "Hellenism" (the imitation of the Greeks).
