Emblem of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers in the oak tree
The trunk represents the National Organization.
The main branches are the State Congresses.
The small branches are the Districts and Councils.
Are the local associations and the leaves are the individual members.
Each one, from the largest branch to the smallest leaf, draws its life from the parent trunk.
Ask yourself, “ what kind of a tree would this Oak be, if every leaf were just like me?”
Parent-teacher prayer
Heavenly Father, who art our creator and God:
We thank Thee for all the blessings that thou hast bestowed upon us, more especially for the children and our relation to them. We ask that Thou wilt endow us with wisdom and strength as we care for and nurture them. may we be thine instruments to lead our children to a realization of thy power and thy love.
Bless Thou our fellowship as we work for the children of our land. Lead us in steadfastness and faith toward the solution of the great problems that confront our world today.
Consecrate us to Thy service and to the service of all children, everywhere.
Amen
**Keep smiling it makes people wonder what we've been up to.
Yours in PTA service... your District officers
PTA Song

You We'll all agree
We've found the greatest blessing of humanity
When we've joined the PTA.
Chorus:
The PTA... the PTA
United now we stand
And we've pledged our might
In the cause of right
For the children of our native land.
So when you see these letters three,
Remember what they say
Ee will pull together always
That's the motto of the PTA
Our hearts are bound together with the tie that binds,
And it's love we find,
We should bear in mind
We are marching on together for all humankind
So we’ll boost the PTA

Helena PTA Denies Report
Helena (AP)-- the Helena PTA Council has taken exception to a report that PTA State convention delegates were more afraid of the federal government than of Soviet Russia.
William J. Orsello, president of the Helena Council, said a report inferred the entire convention delegation “roared yes” when Mrs. Willa Evans of Lavina asked, “ We're getting federal aid already. What's wrong with the federal government? Are you more afraid of it than you are of Russia?”
Orsello contended only about 20-30 of the 375 delegates attending the Great Falls Convention answered yes.

Lockwood PTA
Rt # 2
Billings, Montana
Dear Mrs. Huff:
I'm writing to thank you especially, and also all of the other people in the local PTA organization that worked on the successful bond election we had on Saturday, February 25th.
This help, I'm sure, helped greatly in getting out the vote. As you know, by 6 o’clock we had our 40% of the voters voting, and from then on it was clear sailing. Also, as you know, the ”Ayes” were 10 to 1 greater than the ”Nayes”.
Thanks to you again for your help and interest and the others too.
Very truly yours,
Marvin Klampe, Supt.

Dear Mary,
In behalf of Allen Wharton, I wish to thank you for your part in making the State Convention a success. As Unit display chairman you did a wonderful job. We had many fine comments on the displays and I'm sure at the next convention there will be even more of them.
I too, am proud of Allen's Chairmen and their workers. It's wonderful to know we can work together as a team. You've done a very good job as your unit’s president and they too, can be ever so happy to have a person such as you guiding them.
Would you please thank your helpers for Allen and I. He is still confined in the hospital and it would help me a lot if you would personally thank them for us.
Have a nice summer - - see you next fall.
Fondly,
Lucy Lenhardt

Watch out, guidance counselors and Men on Mars.
An entire fourth grade is considering being tomorrow's pilots. While they may be too young to help with moon landings, a pupil, Ricky Walters, said, they may help with later landings on Mercury and Mars.
Becoming pilots was an unexpected conclusion by the fourth graders, Mrs. John Schnurr, the Lockwood school teacher said. Even the girls considered aerospace careers she said.
Model makers
Youngsters were encouraged to make models of rockets and planes, they followed the news on Walter Schirra’s six-orbit flight and they went home with space-age vocabularies. “Pupils did a great deal of reading,” Mrs. Schnurr said.” “They show more progress in their reading when it is something of special interest to them rather than reading cold material.” Music lessons included space songs. Art was adapted to the aerospace study. Aviation books were recommended for outside reading reports and vocabulary lessons on such words as propeller led into learning prefixes and suffixes.
Reduced Scale
Youngsters paced off distances and stood in far corners of the room to represent the Galaxy. They made a trip to Logan Field and “developed a feeling of change in the world,” the teacher said. Youngsters remembered Logan Field with enthusiasm.” We saw the airplanes and the workshop where they repair engines,” Nancy Hadley said.
“The airplanes were taking off and landing and I got to watch through field glasses when they brought two or three planes down,” Terry McKeeff joined in.
“I told them that by the time they are grown flying will be as commonplace as driving a car,” Mrs. Schnurr said. “Sometimes we teach them too much of the past and not enough of the future.”
Materials for her class came from a summer course at eastern Montana College, the State Education Department, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Aviation Education Council. The two weeks study put her behind in a forest unit, but she said, “I adapt the textbook to their interest instead of trying to stimulate their interest in the textbook.”

Teacher Variety Please Students

“At least,” the 6th grader said,” we don't have to look at the same teacher all day.”
That is the best part of an experimental program for Lockwood's sixth graders, she told principal Charles Lundgren. The new program will be evaluated in the spring, Lundgren said, but so far he is happy.” For half the school day sixth grade subjects are taught by visiting teachers who take one period of each class, Lundgren said. The homeroom teacher instructs the subjects in which he specializes for half the day and meets with his homeroom in the last 5 minutes of school.
This teaches the youngsters to be more independent and orient them to Junior High, where they switch rooms for each class. Staying in the same room and having their own homeroom teacher gives them the security an elementary pupil needs, he added.
Since the program, called a modified departmental system, was started Lundgren said he has had many comments and no complaints.
Teachers, he said, are happy to specialize in subjects. Pupils know they must complete the work assigned, he said. And, those who might otherwise spend elementary school under women teachers can't help but have men teachers now. Two of the three sixth grade homeroom teachers are men. Lower grades will remain with one teacher in each room, he said.
A Ford Foundation study by George D. Stoddard, chancellor and vice president of New York University, gave Lundgren the idea for the modified departmental system. He adjusted the plan for his small school. “ Perhaps it works best with only a few teachers involved,” he went on. Only about four teachers instruct in each classroom and they can meet to discuss problem or exceptional children. Robert Steffens, one of the teachers, said he appreciated making lesson plans for fewer subjects.” This is a new theory for the sixth grade,” Lundgren said. “So far we're very pleased.”
