Lockwood PTA
Mrs. Ben G. Spencer Pres.
We of the Lockwood PTA wonder if we haven't set a record of sorts in attendance in having 154 of our 165 members present for our February meeting which combined Founders Day observance with Scout week observance. Also had 14 visitors registered besides the many children who are invited for this one night.
Our PTA finds the article in the February issue titled, “Protest to PTA program makers” especially interesting, as the ”gripes” it lists coincide with the opinions of our parents as a result of group discussions we held last year as the educational portion of one of our own programs.
Now, we sincerely try to:
Start on time.
Conduct as much time consuming business as possible in the executive board meetings and report findings or results to the group. Of course, all business cannot be handled in this manner.
Having a workable budget, and having it thoroughly explained to the group has cut down immeasurably on ”haggling” over little things.
Our pupil entertainment comes on “family night” which is also Founders’ Day observance. This is the one meeting of the year when the children are “invited.” Having one special night for the youngsters helps with the problem of small children in the audience.
We try to use speakers for “parent educational” purposes according to current needs and desires. It helps to let the speakers know just how much time they will be allotted and most are very cooperative and keeping within their time limit. This way, they can plan for the discussion. In the time given them.
One of our officers came up with a suggestion that each president try keeping a diary of dates and projects along with any helpful information they might have to make it easier on new officers when they take over.

Grade 3 News continued
Our science class watched a caterpillar spin his cocoon. They also had a small toad but the class decided to turn him loose. We transplanted two different kinds of cactus we found in the hills near the school.
Mrs. Norma Guy is our spelling teacher and we are trying very hard to earn our stars for the chart She has made for us. So far Cheryl Lorang and Judy Becklund and Karen Seiffert are the only ones with stars for the first six weeks of school.
We have been writing letters in language and are very proud of them. Karen Seiffert, Martin Johnson, Judy Berg, James Slough, Janet Busch, and Freddie Anderson have the more carefully written ones. We only wish we could publish them in our news just as they are so you could see how nicely they are learning to write.

First grade news continued
On September 8th, Miss Abernetta Klampe, assistant County Superintendent in charge of primary division gave a Reading Readiness test to all the first grade youngsters. These tests act as a guide in learning each child as an individual person showing what he has already achieved before he started to school. Mr. Pemberton, the county superintendent also visited our school that day and we were all very happy to meet him.
Most of the mothers of grade one pupils came to school the afternoon of September 14th. They sat in the tiny desks in which their own boys and girls usually sit while Miss Klampe and Mrs. Macheledt discussed the importance of the readiness program and cooperation between the parents and the teachers in order to insure a happy successful life for each child.
Don't forget to contribute to Junior Red Cross!!
PTA news
The local PTA has had two meetings this fall, both being well attended by parents and teachers. Everyone is encouraged to attend this [sic] meetings as a full program has been planned for the rest of the school year. Any suggestions for program improvement will be appreciated.
The following programs have been outlined and will be carried out to the best of our ability of our group.

January: This month should be dedicated to the growth of the community. Talks and discussions of community problems will be given. A specific speaker has not been decided upon.
February: The month for Founders Day, it was decided to use this meeting in which to dedicate the new building for the schools in our district.

April: This meeting should stress health. Mr. Martin will be the main speaker.
May: Election and installation of new officers for the coming year.
NOTE:
It is regrettable that some of this news is not too readable, but experience is the best teacher, and for the next edition we will use heavier paper so that each side of the printing will not interfere with the other. We hope to do better next time!
