2015 Australian English Study Trip - Emma Lo Sze Ching

This summer, I joined an immersion programme which was organized by Hong Kong Catholic Diocesan Schools Council to Australia. The trip lasted 21 days from July 19 to August 8. The aim of this tour was to enhance students’ communication skills and self-care ability.

During the trip, I stayed in the host family. Talking to them in English, I had to listen to them carefully. It helped me to concentrate on listening to English. Also, by chatting with them, I knew what they do in their leisure time. For example, they have a gathering with their friends every Saturday. I found their lifestyle relaxing and meaningful.

In Australia, I went to All Saints Anglican School. I was taken to school by my host mother. In my class, I didn’t know most of them at the beginning but we worked things out successfully by working in groups. Besides, I also had a precious opportunity to study with local students. They were so friendly to help me in class.

In addition, I took PE lesson with the local students. I learned how to play cricket and we had a competition. It was amazing and fun. At the same time, I understood the spirit of team work.

Next, I would like to share my unforgettable experience in Australia. It was a kind of cultural exchange. I prepared a presentation about the Umbrella Movement which occurred in Hong Kong. The Australians were curious about it. While giving a presentation, I learned how to express my attitude as a HongKonger. It was challenging work as it was a political topic and I did not really know a lot about politics in Hong Kong.

Last but not least, I did improve my English through this study tour. Now, I can speak English more confidently. I become more independent after the tour that I can take good care of myself. And I am able to spend time wisely. The most important thing is that, I can identify my strengths and my favourite way of learning, such as doing experiments.

This study tour gave me a lot of directions for my life. I would love to join the study tour next time! It is meaningful and rewarding.
