A quickish ride through to Sansepolcro, drop the luggage and then off to the festival. Should be heaps of fun. It is only 26Km to Anghiari and 36Km in total, with "only" a 600m gain in the day's ride.
The day commences with around 10Km of very flat and very straight secondary road through farming country. Then after we join the wider road to Anghiari it heads steadily up a valley with forest on both sides. It gets gradually steeper until it is a genuine climb of about 300m over 6Km to the village of Scheggia. At the top of the hill is a "GPM" line on the road :-) and a bar or two.
Then it is downhill for another 6Km, with a little climb to the village of Anghiari, one of the "orange flag" villages of Toscana. You can easily see why it is regarded as special. Maybe we will stop for a while or we can always come back on the next day.
Then we have 8Km of downhill and flat to Sansepolcro. The road is straight and you can see Sansepolcro across the plain the whole way. The plain is the valley of Fiume Tevere (the River Tiber) which of course flows down to Rome and then out to sea at Fiumicino which we visited briefly when we arrived in Italy.
The day we arrive is the culmination of the annual festival which features an archery tournament for crossbow archers from two towns. Our timing is just right! Two nights planned at Sansepolcro, so the next day can be more casual. Perhaps we will ride back the few kilometres to have a better look at Anghiari. On the other hand if we want to have a slow day and wander around Sansepolcro, that's fine too.
We have two nights planned for Albergo Fiorentino which is right in the centre of this small town.
