From Firenze we head south on country roads to Greve in Chianti.
With only 29km to ride and not a huge amount of climbing we can spend some time enjoying the scenery of beautiful Firenze before we make a start. Stopping for caffe and cantucci, with or without the typical glass of Vin Santo along the route is certainly in order also!
We start the day by continuing east along the Arno and then southwards as we wind through the beautiful hills of Chianti Classico, with olives and grapes alongside the road until we reach Greve. There are plenty of places to stop in between, including Impruneta and Strada in Chianti. Impruneta has a very large piazza and public park. Strada in Chianti on the other hand doesn't look all that attractive.
Our accommodation for the two nights is Hotel Restaurant "Giovanni da Verrazzano" right on main piazza (Piazza Giacomo Matteotti) in Greve in Chianti, so a great place to enjoy the sights and tastes that make the Chianti Classico region so famous. On a previous trip, K&J&P&C had a sandwich and beer there.Â
Across the piazza is Macelleria Falorni, makers of the best prosciutto I have ever eaten, fabulous wild boar and fennel sausage and much, much more!
Right outside the door of the hotel is where the Chianti Classico wine festival is held. We will be here for the two quietest days (Thu/Fri) before the crowds arrive on Saturday.
If we want a sit down dinner one evening, Ristorante Gallo Nero is well recommended.
