Safe2Tell

In the wake of the latest school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., parents around the country are struggling with feelings of helplessness and are searching desperately for ways to protect their kids at school. Safe2Tell is set-up for ANYBODY including children, adults, caregivers, and teachers to annonymously report ANYTHING that concerns or threatens you, your friends, your family or your community. This can be done through the website, an e-mail, a phone call or even a text!!!! Please help empower our community to speak up!

From CO PTA re: Gun Safety

At the Colorado PTA Legislative Committee meeting on February 26, we decided to respond to numerous requests for PTA to take action in response to the recent school shooting in Florida.

These are the things we would like to ask you to consider doing:

  • Write a letter to Senators Michael Bennett and Cory Gardner, as well as your U.S. Representative, suggesting that Congress take action to reduce gun violence and promote gun safety in our schools and our communities. The issues most important to address are as follows:

    • School safety (no guns in schools)

    • Background checks

  • If you could give these letters to us, or email them to legislative@copta.org, we can hand-deliver them to our members of Congress when we visit them for the National PTA Legislative Conference March 13-15.

  • Encourage members of your PTA/PTSA to write letters of their own. Again, if they could arrange for us to have these letters by the second week of March, we can hand-deliver them. If they send the letters on their own, we would very much appreciate they send a copy to legislative@copta.org.

  • Suggest to your members who are passionate on this issue that they consider testifying on gun bills in the Colorado Legislature. We don’t have exact dates for bill hearings right now, but if they express this interest, we will contact them at the right time. Have them contact legislative@copta.org.

NATIONAL PTA’S POSITIONS ON GUN SAFETY

The National PTA (NPTA) supports federal efforts to protect children and youth from gun violence. PTA also advocates restricting access to guns from persons who may endanger public safety. PTA believes that we must make every attempt to reduce violence, especially incidents that involve firearms. PTA recognizes the importance of parent involvement in the decision-making process in the development and implementation of school safety policies, including crisis response plans.

The Great Schools, Thriving Communities Ballot Initiative

The Great Schools, Thriving Communities ballot initiative was inspired by a diverse and inclusive coalition of education-connected organizations working to advance better and more equitable funding of public schools. Colorado PTA is proud to be one of the organizations who participated over the past year and half in discussions on this critical topic. Colorado PTA is proud to be endorsing this initiative.

This ballot measure builds on the successes of Colorado’s public schools by expanding educational opportunities for our students to prepare them for success in college, career and life, preparing a qualified workforce for decades to come, and ensuring that Colorado’s economic prosperity is shared with every community from corner-to-corner.

We need your help in collecting signatures across Colorado! Petitions are available now — sign up here.

Other ways you can support and promote this important initiative are provided in this handout. Click here to learn more and help us give voters a choice this November.
