2022-23 Reflections - Show Your Voice

What is Reflections?

Reflections is an annual art contest sponsored by the National PTA. The Jeffco PTA has run a successful contest each school year and awards scholarships to graduating seniors for their success in Reflections. The goal of PTA's arts in education programming is to provide opportunities for all students to explore and be involved in the arts.

Who Can Participate?

Students from pre-K through 12th grade may enter the Reflections art contest; therefore ALL students from Kyffin may participate. Students enter a project based on this year's theme: "Show Your Voice", in any of the following categories: Visual Arts, Photography, Literature, Film Production, Dance Choreography, or Music Composition. Participants may submit projects in several categories; however, only ONE project per category. For example, a student could enter one Photography project, one Literature project, and one Music Composition project.

Important Kyffin Reflections Dates:

  • All projects with Student Entry Forms are due by: Friday, October 14th

    • Judging will occur during the week of: October 16th

  • Awards Ceremony and Reception: Wednesday, November 9th

Student Participants, Don't Forget to:

Don’t forget to include a Title and write an Artist Statement relating the project to the theme, “Heroes Around Me.” Half of the score will be based on the Artist Statement and how well you connect the theme to the art project. The artist statement communicates what inspired the work, how it relates to the theme, and the content of the work. The statement must include at least one sentence, but may not exceed 100 words.

How are the entries judged at Kyffin?

Entries are separated by art category (i.e. Photography) and by age categories (i.e. 3rd - 5th grade). Our judges score each entry on interpretation of the theme, creativity, and artistic technique. Please note that the interpretation of the theme is weighted most in the judges' scores: it's HALF of the total score!

Please pay attention to the following rules:

    • Each entry must be the original work of one student only. An adult may not alter the creative integrity of a student’s work. Because the program is designed to encourage and recognize each student’s individual creativity, help from an adult or collaboration with other students is not allowed except in the Special Artist Division.

    • Visual Arts: Framed artwork and artwork containing loose materials is not accepted. Matting is accepted. Dimensions must not exceed 24x30 inches, including matting.

    • Photography: Framed photos are not accepted. Matting is accepted. • Print photo entries must be a single print, and cannot be a collage or collection of photos. Photo size cannot be smaller than 3x5 inches and must not exceed 11x14 inches, including matting. Mount on sturdy material such as cardboard or poster board. • Digital Photo: Must be high resolution (300 dpi or higher).

Parents, what can you do?

    1. Help your student understand and follow all the rules for the contest

    2. Help fill out the required, official Student Entry Form and requested Online Entry Form that must be submitted with each project. Your child must create the Artist Statement and Title, but you may transcribe your child's words.

    3. Prepare completed project(s) for display following the mounting guidelines, Preparing Projects.

    4. Stand back and let your child shine. Ensure that your child's contest entry is exclusively their own ideas and work, and is not a collaboration with anyone else, even a parent.
