Linear Measure

Measurement is a very important ingredient in engineering and building. It is given very little attention in the middle school math curriculum, but many have not mastered this skill. I spend a good deal of time throughout the semester teaching and practicing measurement.

The United States uses the Customary (English) System of measurement, and is one of only three countries in the world still using it as the main system of measuring. However, most all math in science utilizes the Metric System. Using two systems of measurement at the same time can be very confusing. We practice and use both systems of measurement in GTT.

One of the many benefits of the GTT activities is students have to actually USE their math skills to design, construct, and complete their projects. This can greatly improve students' mastery of math concepts that may not have been understood before. Many students may begin to view math differently, and can transfer the improved understanding directly into their core classes.
