Background info:
I was born and mostly raised in Seattle, WA but with stops on the way in Edmonton, Alberta and Helsinki, Finland. I went to the University of Washington for my undergrad degree (B.S. in Math and Physics) and to UC Berkeley for a Ph.D. in Mathematics (my thesis was in Number Theory). I taught at Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences for 2 years before moving to sunny San Diego and The Grauer School!
I live in San Diego with my wife Molly and son Sammy, who is a Grauer baby - say hi to him in the nursery!!
Besides learning and teaching Math, some things I also love include: hiking, reading (feel free to tell me about what you're reading - I love to hear it!!), and traveling. And of course, doing these activities and more with my family.
What students can expect from me:
I love mathematics and will unashamedly share with you why I find it so endlessly fascinating, so get ready! If there's any trait I cherish more than anything in students (and try to reward amply), it is intellectual curiosity and the willingness (and fearlessness) to ask questions, because until you recognize that there is something you don't know, you will not learn anything. While I certainly don't expect all students to share my passion for mathematics, I will expect you all to be open to the idea that math class can be a source of fun, intellectual growth, and just maybe, inspiration. Whether you actually find the math you learn in my class that awesome is a question we'll answer together.
