Q: How do I use the LingLab software?
A: If you would like more information, feel free to email the LingLab RA with any and all questions.
Q: I'm making a survey and sending it to participants online. How can I embed audio files into the survey?
A: Use Dropbox! You can share links to anything in your public folder. Just drag your sound clips/movies/any file into the Public folder. Then right click on an individual file. A menu will pop up; click on 'Dropbox'. A submenu will pop up and from here, you will have the option to "Copy Public Link". Voila! You can include these links as hyperlinks in your surveys so your participants will have access to all the necessary media. (Did you delete your public folder? Just create a new folder and name it 'Public'.)
Q: How can I run a 2-way ANOVA?
A: Use R. Read here to learn how. Don't like R? Come to the lab and run ANOVA on SPSS. Read here to learn how.
Q: Why don't the lab computers have more software?
A: Students tend to use their own computers. HoyaComputing makes several software programs free to students for their personal computers. Additionally, much of this software is made available on computers in the library.
Q: What do I do if the software I need isn't available?
A: Software is put on the lab computers by request. If you'd like to make a request for software installation, please email the lab committee via the lab assistant and include the following information:
The price of the software.
Whether it is available through UIS.
What operating system requirements it has (PC, Mac, 64-bit, etc.)
What version of the software you're requesting (Professional, Standard)
What kind of data this software is best suited for
If this is a paid program, what this program has to offer that other, similar software cannot provide. For example, what kinds of experiments does this software allow you to create that are impossible to create with current lab software?
If this is a paid program, what kind of students is this program most useful for? Do you know of other students who are interested in using this program?
Is there a specific level of expertise that is required to operate this software?
Q: How long does it take to process a request for software?
A: If the software is free and relatively simple to install, the Lab RA can install it during office hours. If the software requires payment, installation requires approval by the Lab Committee (and this approval time is relative to the cost of the software). The burden of convincing the Lab Committee to purchase software falls on the requesting student, so please be as specific as possible in making requests!
