Define the words above by using the 'Command Term' posters in the classroom, your 'Geography Course Companion' text book by Nagle and Cooke and the useful links below.
Activity One - Group Work
- As you watch the clip above write down the examples they give to reduce, reuse and recycle goods.
- Now sort the four key terms in the syllabus point, conservation, waste reduction, recycling and substitution, in to the headings of reduce, reuse and recycle. Justify your choices with examples.
We will be focusing on plastic as our high consumption good to reduce, recycle or substitute for, but why focus on this?
- Write down every plastic item you have used in the last 2 days. Discuss your answers with a neighbour.
- Watch the clip below and write down the problems of using so much plastic.
- Write a paragraph to suggest why focusing on the reduction of our use of plastic is an important issue to focus on.
The group will be divided into four teams to look at the four key methods of reducing our consumption of resources. You will present your findings to the rest of the group using google slides and develop an information guide to give them (this could be a google doc that is shared). Key things to consider:
- What does the word mean.
- A mini case study of resource that is being conserved, reduced, recycled or substituted for.
- What was the problem?
- How is the problem being solved?
- What success has the scheme had?
You could all look at the same good but from different angles e.g. plastic bags.
