Random Selection
The practice of calling on students who raise their hands is not usually the best way to encourage on-task behavior or practice content. It simply lets too many students off-the-hook or erodes the teacher-student relationship with "gotcha calling". Random selection is one way to encourage students to be on task when we prompt them to consider target content. When we use a random selection tool, we maintain consistent calling, and we can introduce a bit of fun as well!

Tips:
Ensure use of appropriate Wait Time, which is strongly correlated with an increase in length, accuracy, and use of evidence in student responses as well as an increase in the number of follow-up questions asked by students.
Teach and use the temporary Pass Option.
Put students back in the pool after answering a question so they remain on-the-hook.
Some tools such as the Pick Me App also allow for quick record keeping of students' correct/incorrect responses.
