156B Week 9
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
A working prototype has been created and shown to the sponsor
need to verify results from analysis by using prototype
need to add weights to gyrowheel along with other adjustments
Accomplishments from Previous Week
constructed a complete working prototype
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
make improvements to our prototype:
cut supporting pole to 25in. - Cross
make hole for bearing block slightly bigger - Cross and KC
Report, Webpage, CAD - Steven and Aki
add weights to gyrowheel - KC
remachine supporting part for precessing frame - Cross and KC
modify design to include string to spin gyrowheel - Steven and Aki
design force gauge - Steven and Aki
design method to fix nutating frame and precessing frame - KC and Cross
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
5/22/18 in person - our team met with the sponsor in our lab space to show him our prototype. Overall he was impressed and happy with his results. Here are the adjustments he would like us to make in the order of importance:
1. Put weights on gyrowheel: adding weights will increase the angular momentum of the gyroscope which will lead to increased precession and nutation when the gyrowheel is spun
2. Reduce height: we are going to cut the supporting pole to be 25 in. so that the gyroscope is a more comfortable height for Prasad to operate and also so that the pole will fit in the luggage when the gyroscope is disassembled.
3. Remachine supporting part for precessing frame to eliminate wobbling
4. Modify gyroscope design to include a string that can be attached to spin the gyrowheel.
5. Design some sort of force gauge so that measureable forces can be applied to the gyroscope.
6. Design a method to be able to fix nutating frame and precessing frame at any angle.
other comments:
how many bolts necessary to constrain tripod to base? using less would make it easier to assemble/disassemble
Prasad would prefer we don't use a motor
Prasad also would like us to not bother implement sensors due to lack of time and to focus on improving the functionality of the gyroscope
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
5/22/18 over email, in response to the list of priorities above:
Points 1-4 all sound good
Point 5 - find a force source, not a force sensor
brainstorm at least 3 ways of creating a force source
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
none
Risks and Areas of Concern
friction in rotation of precessing frame
how will we fix nutating frame at any angle?
Resources or Information Required but not Available

Update Gantt chart.
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
have spent approximately $950
we have a flexible budget of $1000 with a maximum budget of $2000
Progress on Report and Webpage
2nd rough draft of report and webpage have been completed as of Friday week 8
