156B Week 4
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Initial CAD model of the gyroscope has been completed
bicycle wheel for nutating frame has had its spokes removed
completed and presented Design Proposal Presentation
parts for precessing frame and base have been ordered
Shafts and bearings for gyroscope have been ordered
Accomplishments from Previous Week
completed and presented Design Proposal Presentation
removed spokes from nutating frame
ordered parts for precessing frame and initial base
ordered shafts and bearings for gyrowheel and gyroscope frame
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Aki - decide on and order motor for gyrowheel - finish by end of day 4/23/18
Aki - conduct more in depth gyroscope analysis for Prasad - finsih by 4/24/18 before sponsor meeting and collaborate as a team so everyone understands the analysis
Aki and Cross - construct base with wheels, finish by 4/27/18
KC and Cross - construct precessing frame once parts arrive - finish by 4/27/18 but depends on when parts arrive
Everyone - decide on support for gyroscope and order along with brackets - finish by 4/27/18
Everyone - decide on all miscellaneous parts such as bearings and brackets we might need for first prototype and order - finish by 4/27
Steven and Aki - complete and upload updated draft of report to website - finish by end of day 4/27/18
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
4/18 over email - Prasad would like us to conduct more in-depth gyroscope analysis:
solve equations for when p and q are not set equal to zero
solve the 2nd order nonlinear ODE for Case 2 where precession is fixed
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
comments from Design Proposal Presentation 4/18/18 over email:
should start presentation with overview of project
the purpose of wheels on the base is still unclear - future meetings and presentations we will make sure to spend time explaining the purpose of the wheels
Gantt chart needs shorter text with larger fonts for presentation - we will update Gantt chart accordingly
wants us to use a consistent figure when describing precession and nutation - we have a consistent CAD figure that we annotated but I am not sure wihat Professor Delson is asking for, we will ask for clarification on this in our next meeting
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
4/18/18 feedback from presentation over email:
physical test to verify the theoretical analysis
should include an explanation of the purpose of wheels on the base
include dimensions on CAD, create a CAD drawing
better explanation of how the motor will drive motion of the gyrowheel
Risks and Areas of Concern
Is presence of friction going to interfere with the functionality of our gyroscope?
what kind of support should be used to connect the gyroscope to the base?
Resources or Information Required but not Available
none
Schedule
Describe upcoming milestone
complete prototype of gyroscope by end of week 5
Update Gantt chart.
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
bought two bicycle wheels
2 sets of wheels for base
aluminum bars for precessing frame
brackets for precessing frame
Wood base for initial prototype
we have spent around $300, have around $700 remaining plus $600 workshop budget
Progress on Report and Webpage
2nd draft of report has been completed and uploaded to the team website
gyroscope dynamics portion of webpage has been started
difficult formatting equations and figures?
