Week 7 Progress Report
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Working to get more done successfully: printing things, testing hardware, and running into troubles
Worries about the deadline
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Set up RaPi camera board and code to record video (Michael)
Researched code for stepper and steering motors (Michael)
Discovered difficulties with laser cutting delrin gears on lasercam (Damian and Trevor)
3D printed first part of housing design (Ciara)
Worked on other CAD (Damian and Ciara)
Purchased materials and hardware (Damian)
Created dxfs for laser cutting (Damian)
3D printed steering gears for future testing (Damian)
Cut and tested a test gasket (Damian and Trevor)
Cut out tentacles (Damian)
Machined delrin piece and double o-ring seal (Trevor)
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Get one spare acrylic 1’x2’’ sheet and a tight balloon for testing and fabrication (Damian)
Test the gasket for waterproofing by placing in compression between dome and acrylic underwater for at least 30 minutes (Everyone)
Test double o-ring test by running attached to a balloon full of water for at least 5 minutes (Trevor)
Have a discussion and take notes with Jerry and Jules about what we can realistically be finished in time frame and parallel task management (Everyone)
Check of everything on To do list by end of the week (Everyone)
To do List:
Buy velcro and acetone (Damian)
Work on report to address instructor comments and progress (Everyone)
Discover the thing that works to be a focus of the design (Everyone)
CAD the electromagnet idea (Damian and Trevor)
Do force calculations and modeling for electromagnet setup (Trevor)
Get stepper motors to run for testing (Michael)
Testing entire setup for flapping motion (Everyone)
Update CAD according to changes to prototype (Everyone)
Perform center of mass calculations and FEA in Solidworks (Ciara)
Test the steering gears (Everyone)
Clean water tank (Everyone)
Update Gantt (Trevor)
Update webpage (Michael)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Look into fatigue of elements
Will do some modeling and look into it
How avoid rotation with steering mechanism about body axis
Going to test steering to see if it is an issue
Not going to be perfect the first time…”if you had 2 years you could do a good job”
Part of training is to be with time
Going to be increasing our time management skills
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Try to stay away from laser cut gears
Laser cutter didn’t work so we are looking into purchased gears
Work in parallel to get things done faster (lots of work left)
Worried about time and dividing tasks appropriately for parallel work
Look into O-rings for sealing and use Parker’s guide
Used in machining the seal
Various comments on report section clarity
Will be working on the report this week
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Eric (in person 5/6/2016) - diffuse light to see underwater
Phuong (email/text) - coding advice
Risks and Areas of Concern
Stepper motors don’t seem to be working properly w/ the motor driver board/RPi
Waterproofing
Steering mechanism’s ability stabilize jellyfish given disturbances
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Fume hood and acetone vapors
Schedule
Describe upcoming milestone
Have discussions about project progress
Have discussions about identifying tasks and assigning them
Update Gantt chart.
