Week 5 Progress Report
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Testing actuation methods
Determining what works and doesn’t
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Constructed and designed housing and mounts for linear actuator testing (Damian)
Prepped test for wire pulling actuation (Ciara)
Bought dome (Ciara)
Got material and pieces for testing/observing double o-ring seal and diaphragm (Trevor)
Printed and revamped the Miga Motor oil resevoir (Michael)
Set up the Raspberry Pi (Michael)
Tested aquatic pumps as steering mechanism (Trevor)
Looked into magnetic actuation feasibility and buying magnets (Trevor)
Worked on testing system (Everyone)
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Setup Raspberry Pi and test actuators (Everyone)
Buy and machine (for testing) gears for steering mechanism (Ciara)
Finish ordering things like magnets, electromagnets, another dome, another battery (Damian)
Update the Gantt Chart (Trevor)
Eliminate designs for actuation (Everyone)
Resize components to fit inside a dome (Ciara)
Install OpenCV on RPi (Michael)
Program RPi to run stepper motors (Michael)
Document testing and update website (Michael)
Contact other groups with RPi (Michael as lead with others)
Do calculations of force and power or magnet actuation and wire actuation (Trevor)
Add remaining parts to CAD for final design (Ciara)
Look into equations to replace linkages with flexures (Damian)
CAD the magnetic actuation design (Damian)

Have a lot on your plate
Pushing forward with testing the actuators to move past it
Worried about power consumption
Looked into the power consumption of each actuator type
Calculate friction forces on the o-ring seal
Got Tom and Evan’s help to make a test double o-ring
Talk to someone in rov field about double o-rings
Haven’t done it yet
Consider eliminating things by workability
Still testing to compare workability
Steering concerns with buoyancy and center of mass distances
Looking into resizing/reconfiguring layout to fit dome better
Makes it look pretty but make it functional
Putting aside the fin-ray until function has been demonstrated
Want access ports
Looking into purchasable ports
Come up with primary and secondary goals
Going to talk with Jules about it
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Joe - look into automotive and plumbing for corrugated pipe sections (4/20/2016)
Oscar - It is really cool. Simple is better (4/22/2016)
Risks and Areas of Concern
Time and purchases
Implementing controls on Raspberry Pi (lack of experience)
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Weekend access to design studio (Sunday and Saturday)
Schedule
Upcoming Milestones
