156B Week 2

Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.

    • Analysis for buckling and tip design is done.

    • Material has been selected, steel.

    • Still need to find what kind of plating/alloy to use stainless?.

    • Analysis still needs to be completed before final design is decided.

    • Design of the attachment to the existing pipe needs to be done.

    • No fabrication of our actual final project has started yet.

    • Still need to test prototype made in plastic before fabrication on the final stainless steel design.

Accomplishments from Previous Week

    • Completed individual component analysis

    • Decided on a viable wet mate connector

    • Decided on sufficient lighting for our camera and housing to see

Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.

    • Complete design proposal presentation-............................................................. ALL

    • Begin introduction and background sections of final report- .................................Juan Deleon

    • Finalize wet mate and cabling necessary and get it ordered- ..............................Curtis McCabe

    • Finalize materials for housing and identify where to get it from if possible order it- Vicki Bahn

    • Write up of Progress report- ............................................................................Curtis McCabe

    • Update Gantt chart, add more specific tasks and assign to specific people- ........Juan Deleon

Address Sponsor Comments- ..........................................................................ALL, waiting for Monday.

    • Call Vibrocore company, like Rossfelder, to determine friction reduction and how the system is used. Ask how the system is pulled out and moved to another sample site..................Jonathan Riestra

    • Research and order amazon wet mates ..............................................................Curtis McCabe

Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)

    • Waiting on meeting Monday at noon and we will delegate tasks as requested by sponsor.

    • Need to call Vibracore company to find out how much the friction is reduced when vibrating.-Curtis McCabe

    • Call amazon wet mate companies and find out depth we can use them at and order them.

    • Base can be figured out later, it is not a high priority.

    • For wedge velocity calculations include the housing and height of 6-10 ft

    • Window size 2 inches should be good, look more at camera that can see it.

    • For lighting it's fine to power by battery inside the housing or by splicing Ethernet

    • Sponsor will obtain info on resolution and what types of particles will be looked at.

    • Consider lens mountable to the camera

    • Talked about video taken upon pulling out of the hole rather than when going in.

    • Good idea to ask how the system will be moved to another hole location, ship hoist?, smooth/rough exit.

    • Need to pin down how much light is needed vs how much is too much.

    • Look at geometry of where to put lighting, some arrangements are good for seeing different things.

Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)

Last meeting was in person on Wed 4/1/15

    • Talked about Free Body Diagram of base and pipe. especially with respect to how to drive it in vertically.

    • Comments supported using a wedge tip and rollers on the base.

    • Asked about the height constraint for the rollers.

    • Reviewed simplified buckling analysis using critical load equation, factor of safety in the 100s.

    • Discussed material of the window, diamond is better, but sapphire is pretty good.

    • Look at Parker O-ring handbook for recommendations and how to use/apply O-rings

Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)

    • None

Risks and Areas of Concern

    • Simulating the final project in the application it was made for

    • Reducing vibration for a clear video/image of the sediment

Resources or Information Required but not Available

    • How Vibration affects the sand

    • What effect does it have on the force on our housing

    • Required resolution

Schedule

    • Describe upcoming milestone- Finalize parts/materials and get stuff ordered

-Build a clear plastic prototype to test it

    • Identify the camera we will use with info from sponsor and order it- waiting on info from sponsor

    • Update Gantt chart.

Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)

    • No expenses this week but we will make a few.
