Newsletter April 16th

Need some helpful ideas over this long break? This page will help get some ideas flowing to keep your kids busy!

Staff Spotlight

Each week we will keep you updated on a variety of different topics and teach your more about our staff and families. This week will check back in with Mr. Tim!

Just checking in to make sure everyone was doing well! We love that we have been able to see some of you on video chat! If you are interested please fill out the sign up genius that was emailed out to all families. We would love to see more of you.

We are keeping busy at the Musser household. I spend my days going on walks and runs while I chase our son Harrison around. I have been keeping up on tv shows, books and rewatching Trolls as it is Harrison's favorite movie! I miss all of our B.A.S.E. families and hope to see you all again soon!

Still Looking for Field Trip Shirt Designs!

We are still looking for help with our field trip shirt design. This design will not just be for the summer but all field trips moving forward. It must have a font and back design as well as "WME B.A.S.E." or "Wildcat Mountain B.A.S.E." Please submit all design ideas to tim.musser@dcsdk12.org

Craft Ideas and fun activities for the week of March April 13th

Rainbow Grapes

What you will need:

  • 1 pound of grapes removed from the vine
  • 1 box of JELLO flavored gelatin in each color of the rainbow
  • Toothpicks
  • Large bowl of water
  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper

Instructions:

1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and set aside

2. Place freshly washed grapes (removed from the vine) in a large bowl of water. Make sure they are completely soaked and covered by the water.

3. Pour the contents of each JELLO gelatin pack into separate bowls for each flavor.

4. Remove one grape from the water bowl at a time using a toothpick. Immediately roll the grape in the gelatin mixture of your choosing – making sure to completely cover all surface area. If any grape is showing through, simply dab that area into the water and place it back in the gelatin mixture to ensure it is completely coated.

5. Lay the coated grapes on the parchment paper-lined baking sheet. After all grapes have been coated and placed on the baking sheet, move it to the refrigerator for up to an hour. Remove the toothpicks and place in a serving bowl or serving tray.

• Once grapes are chilled, the coating hardens and becomes a candy shell.

• Make sure to allow grapes to completely chill before transferring them to a serving container where they’ll be touching; otherwise, the color will rub off and blend with the other grapes.

• A little of the mixture goes a long way. I would recommend a thin layer of the coating as the flavor is quite concentrated.

Mail A Hug

What you will need:

  • one sheet of felt
  • ribbon
  • scissors
  • hot glue

Instructions:

These are made out of felt, although you can use paper and string if you’d like. The felt will last longer and if you are sending your hug on a long journey they won’t get ruined in the mail.

To start, place your sheet of felt on a flat surface, folded in half. Lay the child’s hands on the felt and trace them carefully.

Keeping the sheet folded, cut around the traced shape of the child’s hand so that you end up with four handprints all together, two for each hand.

Take your ribbon and measure the length of the child’s wingspan – from wrist to wrist across the body.

Glue the ribbon to the inside of one set of handprints and then glue the other handprint on top to seal it.

Repeat for the other hand.

You can also label the hands using a permanent marker with the date the child made the hug. If you have multiple children be sure to add their name, too, to remember just whose little hands those were for years to come.

Check out these Sloths!

Try to get the penguins home!

Glowing Magic Milk

What you will need:

Instructions:

Fill a container with just enough milk to cover the bottom. We used a pie pan.

Fill the squeezy bottles with fluorescent watercolors or with watered down florescent paint. The traditional experiment is done with food coloring, so you want that consistency.

Instruct kids to squirt paint around the perimeter of the pan.

Dab a q-tip in dish soap and touch the center of the pan with the q-tip. The colors immediately jump away from the q-tip.

For a short while the colors almost disappear, then they slowly creep back to the center of the pan. It is so cool to watch! Sometimes we add a bunch of color to milk and stick soap covered q-tips all over, watching the paint jump away.
