Current Events Guidelines
Economics is not just something in textbooks, it affects our lives everyday. One of the aims of this class is to help you connect economics to what’s happening in the real world. For this reason, each student will complete two current events assignments this semester and present their article to the class. There will be a sign-up sheet for presentations – make sure you come to class for your presentation! If you miss your date, you will receive a zero. In an emergency, you must make arrangements to switch with another student.
Written Format (20 points)
On a sheet of paper, write your name, the date, the class/period, and the current event number (1 or 2) at the top. Under this, write the title, date and the source of the article,
You should write three short paragraphs (with complete sentences) of the current event:
A short summary – who, what when where – IN YOUR OWN WORDS
How does it relate to economics? Be specific. State how it connects to opportunity cost, incentives, government, supply/demand, etc. Explain the connections.
A personal response or opinion.
Print or cut-out the article and staple it behind your write-up.
Presentation Format (20 points)
Give a 3-5 minute oral presentation on your article. You may use notes, but don’t just read from your write-up! Share your summary, the connection to economics, and your opinions with the class. To involve the class, ask them questions relating to their own opinions/experiences before and after your presentation. You will be graded partly based on how engaged the rest of the class is during your presentation! The point is to connect economics to the real world.
Students who are not presenting must take short notes (2-3 bullet points) on their classmates’ presentations. Keep these in your binder and I will check them for credit.
