Comparative Cultures and Geography
Current Event Guidelines
Culture and geography are not just something in textbooks, they affect our lives everyday. It’s important to stay informed about what’s going on in the world.
For this reason, each student will complete five international (no stories about the U.S.!) current event assignments this semester – one from each region:
• Asia
• Europe
• The Middle East
• The Americas and Caribbean
• Africa
Format (30 points)
On a sheet of paper, write your name, the date, the class/period, and the current event number (1 - 5) and region at the top. Under this, write the title,
date of the article and the source of the article, You should write three paragraphs (with complete sentences) as follows:
1. Summary – a brief summary of the main points of the article in your own words.
2. How does it relate to the cultural universals? Show four connections and explain them.
3. A personal response to the article. Why did you choose it? What do you think about it?
Cut out (or print) the article and attach it to the back of your paper.
Things to Remember:
• The article should be from within two weeks of the due date.
• The article must come from a reliable news source (no fringe web sites).
• If you don’t really understand the article, choose another one that you do understand!
