CCG Travel Guide
Directions: In class the past few weeks, we have been studying geography and culture in-depth. For this assignment, you will use your knowledge of culture and geography to create a travel guide for the country that you have selected from the provided list (everyone must pick a different country). Your mission is not to simply cut and paste facts about your country, but rather, to make it so that someone traveling to the country for the very first time would know how to navigate the culture. In order to gather the information you will be given some in-class computer lab time.
Your travel guide MUST include the following information/sections about your country written in FULL SENTENCES:
Location (relative) http://www.factmonster.com/atlas/mapindex.html
Relative to region or continent (ex. – the west coast of South America)
Location of (east, west, etc., NOT left, right, up, down) 4 neighboring countries and/or major bodies of water (oceans, seas, etc.)
Include a map showing neighboring countries (you don’t have to use the factmonster map, the other websites listed here also have maps you can copy)
Place/Region
Identify the capital + largest cities (3 total) with their populations
(use http://www.factmonster.com/countries/ - when you find your country, look in the blue box on the left)
Physical Features – what the land is like in different regions of the country (beaches, mountains, deserts, forests, etc.)
(use http://www.worldatlas.com, click on the region, then the country, and then click on geography in the orange bar above the maps)
Weather – what is the weather like in different regions of the country? How does it change in different seasons? How should a visitor pack/prepare for the weather depending on when they go?
(Use http://www.lonelyplanet.com/us - find your country and click on “need to know” at the top, then click on "when to go & weather" on the left)
Places of interest – a MINIMUM of 5 things to do/places to see while in this country. USE YOUR OWN WORDS!!! Do not just cut and paste from the internet. WHY are these places interesting? Give details! (Don’t list hotels!)
(Use Google and type in “top things to do in …", or "top things to see in ...” Ignore the pictures at the top - they are often just advertisements! Instead, follow some of the links below and see what they suggest.)
Culture of the Country
Major ethnic groups/religions and language(s)
(use http://www.kwintessential.co.uk/resources/country-profiles.html and click on your country)
MINIMUM of 5 interesting facts on customs and etiquette that are unique to that country or part of the world. These are tips on how to behave there. Explain why they are important or interesting!
(use http://www.kwintessential.co.uk/resources/country-profiles.html and click on your country; don’t just focus on business etiquette!)
Cover complete with title and image(s)
Images on every page with captions explaining the images
Information should be presented in a book or brochure form.
Do not cut and paste information! You must write the ideas in your own words. Your guide is not supposed to be just a list of facts, but a helpful and easy to understand guide of how to get the most out of a country and how to navigate the culture.
