This will be my tenth year in education, and after completing those years I have come to a few conclusions about myself as an educator, and what I believe.
First and foremost, I am a firm believer that every child can and will learn, if they are given the appropriate tools and instruction to do so. While, this looks differently for each student, and at times can be challenging, it is essential to their success that we believe they can achieve those goals.
Secondly, students need to feel a connection with their teachers and the classmates in the room. For this reason, and so many others, I spend countless hours at the beginning of the school year focusing only on building relationships. When I take the time to truly know my students and what makes them who they are, I am amazed by the progress and success we can have as a group. In these uncertain times, students need those connections in order to succeed and believe someone is out there keeping an eye on them, and pushing them forward.
Thirdly, having interactive and engaging instruction that uses all learning styles, is essential in keeping students engaged and performing at high levels. We are in a technological age, where students know more than we do about the newest apps and gadgets out there. In order for educators to reach students, I believe we need to beat them at their own game. We need to harness those learning styles, and use the technology to increase the engagement in our lessons. This engagement and innovative instruction, lends itself to performance on assessments. Students need to have feedback often so they can reflect on and pursue new goals. This allows them to keep moving forward and working towards larger goals.
Lastly, learning needs to be fun. I believe if I love learning, and show that in my everyday teaching, my students will love learning as well. Children of today, are fighting an uphill battle and will face challenges we can't even comprehend. Therefore, it is my job to give them the skills and attributes to allow them to be successful. I believe that starts with making learning fun. When learning is fun, everyone succeeds.
