Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What can a Career Coach do for me?

In most instances, a Career Coach is your work search expert with strategies, techniques, tactics and plans that will improve your career success. Career Coaches provide a comprehensive plan for conducting a successful work search as well as specific tips for increasing your networking success, improving your branded marketing materials (resume, cover letter, networking introductions, etc.) and providing current interview techniques. Finally, a good coach will also provide advice and guidance on how to keep the job once you have one; and how to move from a job into a career.

2. Can I afford career coaching services?

While career coaching is our primary income source, our first priority is to see you gainfully employed. We firmly believe that your positive experience with our coaches will bring more and new business our way. Hence, we will work with you to identify a pricing structure that will meet both your needs and ours. Our primary hourly rate is $150.00 per hour (US). However, we strongly encourage you to contact us directly to discuss your specific situation and fee.

3. How does this work? What should I expect from our meetings?

Our experienced consultants can work with you in a variety of different ways. Most often, clients meet face-to-face, by video conference or consult via telephone. During our sessions, we will review your current work search status, discuss strategy, teach new techniques and determine the next steps. The session is usually conversational. At the end of each session you will have specific assignments or tasks to complete. Ultimately, though, you need to leave the conversation feeling like we have made specific strides in moving your work search closer to your employment goal.

4. What is your process?

Your initial conversation will be an hour consultation at no charge. The focus will be to determine if your needs and our expertise are well suited to each other, a chance for you to “interview” us and for us to get to know you. During that session, we will map out an estimated plan including the number of expected sessions and hourly fees. At the end of the consultation, if you choose to go forward with us, you will be given your first homework assignment. During subsequent sessions we will work our plan. Typically, you can expect to spend a 1-4 sessions on preparing for your search, 1-3 session on networking techniques and 1-2 sessions on interview techniques. Of course, the exact number of sessions is highly dependent on the knowledge you bring to the sessions and the quality of the work search you conduct.

5. What type of coaching methods do you use?

Cecala Career Consultants primarily use a “project planning” methodology similar to that of noted coach and author, Kate Wendleton. The methodology and our coaches are all strategic and tactical in our approach identifying the steps or actions you can take right now, to move your search closer to the goal of employment. We will identify specific daily and weekly goals or measurable metrics to show the progress you are making. Finding a job requires work on your part. We believe in following a well-researched and defined process that has been proven to be successful.

6. How do I choose a coach?

Consider these questions in terms of what is important to you:

  • What kind of help do you need - has the coach worked with this issue before?

  • What relevant experience does the coach have?

  • What is the counselor¹s process?

  • Are you comfortable in the initial telephone conversation with the coach?

  • What is the fee schedule?

  • What is the coach¹s availability and location?

Ask for recommendations or ask friends who they have used.

7. What experience and training does your coach have?

Many people purport to be coaches, few have any true expertise, experience or training. You should choose a coach who has some recognized credentialing or certification. Your coach should have a variety of expertise. To be a good coach they need to be good listeners, empathetic, easy to talk to, and provide advice without being judgmental or demanding. Coaches should have expertise in the current best practices of the job search process as well as strong counseling skills.

Our coaches are certified and continue to seek out ongoing professional education. They possess a college or advanced degree in a counseling related field, professional certification as a career or job coach and at least 15 hours of continuing education annually. Plus, most participate in one or more weekly job seeker support groups where they are exposed to the current ideas and best practices of other coaches and professional in the human capital/talent management industries.
