Mastering the Job Interview: My 4-Step Interview Method©

By Paul Cecala,  GCDF,  August 10, 2023

This past year numerous clients have regaled stories of getting past the first or second interview with little or no feedback as to why. When I asked, all indicated the approach interviews “by the seat of their pants” or “winging it.” None had a systematic approach to conducting an interview.

That is why I developed the 4-Step Interview Method©. This method empowers candidates to take control of the interview process, guide the conversation strategically and increase their chances of leaving a lasting impression on the interviewer. In this article, we'll delve into each step of the 4-Step Interview Method© and explore how it can transform your interview game.

STEP 1: THE 1ST QUALIFIER - UNDERSTANDING THE JOB

The first step involves gathering crucial information about the role you're interviewing for. This is your chance to demonstrate that you've done your homework and are genuinely interested in the position.

At the conclusion of your answer to the interviewer’s icebreaker question (usually, “Tell me about yourself?”), you want to start taking some control or initiative in the conversation by asking a question.

You might start by asking questions that reveal your understanding of the job's duties and responsibilities. Inquire about the key tasks you would be handling on a daily basis. This not only showcases your interest but also provides insights into how well you align with the role.

Or you could seek clarity on the qualities and skills the ideal candidate should possess. This allows you to tailor your responses to emphasize your strengths and relevant experiences that align with the employer's expectations.

Another option is to inquire about what specifically attracted the interviewer to your resume. This not only demonstrates your eagerness to learn but also provides valuable insights into what aspects of your background stood out.

Lastly, you could ask about the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the first 90 days on the job. This shows your commitment to making a tangible impact and sets the stage for discussing your potential contributions.

1st Qualifier – Is about the Job:

STEP 2: THE CONVERSATION - SHOWCASING YOUR FIT

Once you've gained insights into the role, it's time to engage in conversation with the interviewer. This is your chance to highlight your skills and experiences that directly align with the job description.

As the interviewer discusses key skills or tasks related to the position from Step 1, take notes on their responses writing down key words or phrases as memory joggers for the remainder of the interview.  Be ready to provide success stories that demonstrate your proficiency in those areas. These stories should showcase how you've overcome challenges, achieved goals, or demonstrated the desired skills in your past experiences.

Be sure to ask follow-up questions that allow you to delve deeper into the topic. This demonstrates your critical thinking and genuine interest in the subject matter, fostering a meaningful conversation.

After you respond to an interviewer’s question, ask one of your own questions. Remember, an interview is a 2-way conversation and information gathering process. You need to interview them as much as they are interviewing you.

STEP 3: THE TRIAL CLOSE - PUTTING YOURSELF IN THE SPOTLIGHT

The Trial Close is your opportunity to gauge how the interview is going and to position yourself as a strong candidate for the role.

Ask the interviewer what they find appealing about you as a candidate for the position. This invites positive feedback and gives you a chance to reinforce your strengths.

Inquire about any potential concerns or obstacles that might prevent you from moving forward in the process. This not only shows your willingness to address any reservations but also gives you a chance to clear up any misconceptions.

At the conclusion of this step, the interview will hopefully be left with the realization that you are a perfect match for the job. Conversely, if you are not a good fit, you will then have the understanding as to why. Either way, you end with validation for the future of your candidacy.

The Trial Close – It’s about me (the candidate)

STEP 4: ASK FOR THE OFFER - SEALING THE DEAL

In the final step of the 4-Step Interview Method ©, you take proactive steps to move the interview process forward and potentially secure the job offer.

Set the stage for the next conversation by discussing the next steps in the process. This demonstrates your forward-thinking approach and eagerness to continue the discussion.

Finally, it's time to make the bold move and ask for the offer directly. You can phrase this request in a confident manner, such as suggesting that they make the offer now or scheduling the next step.

Express your gratitude for the opportunity and thank the interviewer for their time. This leaves a positive impression and reinforces your professionalism.

Ask For the Offer

CONCLUSION

By taking control of the conversation, strategically showcasing your skills, addressing potential concerns, and confidently asking for the offer, you position yourself as a standout candidate who is well-prepared, engaged, and enthusiastic. Remember, interviews are not just about proving your qualifications; they're also a chance for you to assess if the company aligns with your career goals and values. 75% of my clients who use this method move on to the next step in the interview process. So, go into your next interview armed with the 4-Step Interview Method © and make a lasting impression that can help you secure your dream job.
