The Symphonic Band at Capital begins when during second quarter when students complete the competitive marching band season. This ensemble performs a wide variety of classical music through the year that challenges students to grow musically. In recent years the ensemble has performed 'Night on Fire' by John Mackey, 'Chester' by William Schuman, 'First Suite in Eb' by Gustav Holst, and more.
The Capital High Symphonic Band performs 3-5 concerts at the high school for the public to enjoy. They also perform at clinics and festival in the Treasure Valley and in the Northwest.
During 1st Quarter, the symphonic band participates in marching band. They work on music during class and then meet after school with the percussion to put the show together. The group performs at home football game as well as 3-4 competitions each fall. There are many students who also play sports, and the teachers/coaches work out a schedule so students are able to participate in both at a high level! Marching band finishes its season with the DIII Mel Shelton Marching Band Festival. It is hard work, but well worth the time and energy!
During 2nd and 3rd Quarters, the students in symphonic band prepare music for a winter concert in December, BSU Band Clinic in February, the quad concert, and solo & ensemble festival. During this time, students get to work on their concert ensemble skills. Ever three years, the symphonic band and percussion ensemble take a tour out of state to get clinics with university professors, see incredible performances, and build friendships and memories to last a lifetime!
During the 4th Quarter, the symphonic band students prepare to play at the DIII Large Group Festival, the pops concert, and graduation.
