The Percussion Ensemble at Capital High School is fortunate enough to have its own class in which it performs with the marching and symphonic bands but also as an individual ensemble multiple times a year.
In this ensemble students learn to play a wide variety of percussion instruments such as battery percussion, mallet percussion, and auxiliary percussion. They play in marching percussion and concert percussion ensembles depending on the season of the year. Every year the percussion ensemble performs at the DIII Solo and Ensemble Festival as well as in the indoor percussion shows.
During 1st Quarter, the percussion ensemble participates in the marching band. They work on music during class and then meet after school with the winds to put the show together. The group performs at home football game as well as 3-4 competitions each fall. There are many students who also play sports, and the teachers/coaches work out a schedule so students are able to participate in both at a high level! Marching band finishes its season with the DIII Mel Shelton Marching Band Festival. It is hard work, but well worth the time and energy!
During 2nd and 3rd Quarters, the percussion ensemble work on and prepares for solo & ensemble festival in addition to regular band literature. During this time, students get to work on their concert percussion skills including mallet, snare, and auxiliary percussion. This work culminates the first week of March at the DIII Solo & Ensemble Festival. Ever three years, the symphonic band and percussion ensemble take a tour out of state to get clinics with university professors, see incredible performances, and build friendships and memories to last a lifetime!
During the 4th Quarter, students in percussion ensemble prepare to play at the DIII Large Group Festival with the symphonic band, the pops concert in May, graduation, and learn basic drumset skills.
