We will be reading a short book called Breaking Stalin's Nose, by Eugene Yelchin. Yelchin grew up and was educated in the Soviet Union, and so parts of the story are autobiographical, though he was not alive during the 1930's when the story is set. Yelchin tells the story of a young boy, Sasha Zaichik, who lives in Moscow in the 1930's. He is a passionate communist who wants to become a member of the Young Pioneers, Stalin's communist youth group. However, things begin to change when his father, a secret police officer, is arrested in the middle of the night.
