Welcome to your unit on Communism! Communism is an economic system where the property within a country (factories, farms, buildings, etc.) are owned by the public or by the state, and the wealth is divided equally among citizens, or according to need. The goal of communism is to create a system that is fair for all people, so that there is no division between rich and poor.
We will study communism through a case study on Russia, which was called the Soviet Union when it was under communist control.
We will look at how communism rose in this countries, what changes were made to the country under communism, and if (and why) communism failed.
In this unit, you will be answering the following three questions:
- What conditions in Russia led people to support communism?
- What changes did Russia make to adopt a communist system? Social? Political? Economic?
- How did communist rule change life for people in Russia/USSR?
- Why and how did communism end in USSR?
