Welcome to your unit on the Rise of Nationalism! Nationalism is the feeling that people have of being loyal to and proud of their country, often with the belief that their country is better or more important than other countries. In the US, we tend to think of nationalism as patriotism.
Nationalism began to emerge as the people of France united during the French Revolution. As nationalism spread, it began to have important impacts on Europe, uniting the kingdoms of Italy to form a country, and helping to form the modern country of Germany. Later, nationalism will contribute to the onset of the World Wars.
In this unit, you will be answering the following questions:
- What are the benefits to working with a group of similar people? What are the challenges?
- How can nationalism serve as a unifying source in a country? How can it be a destructive force?
