Welcome to your unit on Imperialism! Imperialism is when a more powerful country takes control of a weaker country, and uses them for economic or military gain.
We will study imperialism from the perspective of the Europeans, who took control of countries in Asia and Africa, in the section called European Imperialism.
We will also examine imperialism from the perspective of the native people in these countries, who tried to resist and keep their independence, in the section called Reactions to Imperialism.
In this unit, you will be answering the following three questions:
- What motivated Europeans to seek control over other countries?
- What advantages did the Europeans have that allowed them to conquer other countries?
- What were the benefits to imperialism for the colonized country? What were the deficits?
- What impact does imperialism still have on the world today?
