I Can Statements for Chapter 11:

  • I can explain Earth's major geological processes and hazards. {11-1}
    • Dynamic processes move matter within the Earth and on its surface, and can cause volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, erosion, and landslides
  • I can explain how the Earth's rocks are recycled {11-2}
    • The three major types of rock found in the Earth's crust - sedimentary, igneous, metamorphic - are recycled very slowly by the processes of erosion, melting, and metamorphism
  • I can describe mineral resources and explain the environmental effects of using them {11-3}
    • We can make some minerals in the Earth's crust into useful products, but extracting and using these resources can disturb the land, erode soils, produce large amounts of solid waste, and pollute the air, water and soil
  • I can analyze how long supplies of nonrenewable mineral resources will last. {11-4}
    • All nonrenewable mineral resources exist in finite amounts, and as we get closer to depleting any mineral resource, the environmental impacts of extracting it generally become more harmful
    • Raising the price of a scarce mineral resource can lead to an increase in its supply, but there are environmental limits to this effect
  • I can determine how to use mineral resources more sustainably {11-5}
    • We can try to find substitutes for scarce resources, reduce resource waste, and recycle and reuse minerals

  • Describe what keeps us and other organisms alive {3-1}
    • The four major components of the Earth's life-support system are the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the geosphere and the biosphere
    • Life is sustained by the flow of energy from the sun through the biosphere, the cycling of nutrients within the biosphere, and gravity
  • Explain the major components of an ecosystem {3-2}
    • Some organisms produce the nutrients they need, others get the nutrients they need by consuming other organisms, and some recycle nutrients back to producers by decomposing the wastes and remains of other organisms
  • Describe what happens to energy in an ecosystem {3-3}
    • As energy flows, through ecosystems in food chains and webs, the amount of chemical energy available to organisms at each successive feeding level decreases
  • Describe what happens to matter in an ecosystem {3-4}
    • Matter, in the form of nutrients, cycles within and among ecosystems and the biosphere, and human activities are altering these chemical cycles

I Can Statements for Chapter 6 (Old Chapter 8):

  • Analyze the general nature of aquatic systems {6-1}
    • Saltwater and freshwater aquatic life zones cover almost three-fourths of the Earth's surface, with oceans dominating the planet.
    • The key factors determining biodiversity in aquatic systems are temperature, dissolved oxygen content, availability of food, and availability of light and nutrients necessary for photosynthesis
  • Formulate why marine aquatic ecosystems are important {6-2}
    • Saltwater ecosystems are irreplaceable reservoirs of biodiversity and provide major ecological and economical services
  • Extrapolate how human activities have affected marine ecosystems {6-3}
    • Human activities threaten aquatic biodiversity and disrupt ecological and economic services provided by saltwater systems
  • Detail why freshwater ecosystems are important {6-4}
    • Freshwater ecosystems provide major ecological and economic services, and are irreplaceable reservoirs of biodiversity
  • Extrapolate how human activities have affected freshwater ecosystems {6-5}
    • Human activities threaten biodiversity and disrupt ecological and economic services provided by freshwater lakes, rivers and wetlands

I Can Statements continued for Chapter 6 (Old Chapter 11):

  • Analyze the major threats to aquatic biodiversity {11-1}
    • Aquatic species are threatened by habitat loss, invasive species, pollution, climate change, and overexploitation, all made worse by the growth of the human population.
  • Detail the steps to protect and sustain marine biodiversity {11-2}
    • We can help to sustain marine biodiversity by using laws and economic incentives to protect species, setting aside marine reserves to protect ecosystems, and using community based integrated coastal management.
  • Research how we should manage and sustain marine fisheries {11-3}
    • Sustaining marine fisheries will require improved monitoring of fish and shellfish populations, cooperative fisheries management among communities and nations, reduction of fishing subsidies, and careful consumer choices in seafood markets.
  • Hypothesize how we should protect and sustain wetlands {11-4}
    • To maintain the ecological and economic services of wetlands, we must maximize the preservation of remaining wetlands and the restoration of degraded wetlands.
  • Detail how we should protect and sustain freshwater lakes, rivers and fisheries {11-5}
    • Freshwater ecosystems are strongly affected by human activities on adjacent lands, and protecting these ecosystems must include protection of their watersheds.
  • Hypothesize our priorities for sustaining aquatic biodiversity {11-6}
    • Sustaining the world's aquatic biodiversity requires mapping it, protecting aquatic hotspots, creating large fully protected marine reserves, protecting freshwater ecosystems, and carrying out ecological restoration of degraded coastal and inland wetlands.

I Can Statements for Chapters 4 & 9:

  • Analyze the idea of Biodiversity and interpret why it is important {4-1}
    • The biodiversity found in genes, species, ecosystems, and ecosystem processes is vital to sustaining life on Earth.
  • Determine how Earth's life changes over time {4-2}
    • The scientific theory of evolution explains how life on Earth changes over time through changes in the genes of populations.
    • Populations evolve when genes mutate and give some individuals genetic traits that enhance their abilities to survive and to produce offspring with these traits (natural selection)
  • Interpret how geological processes and climate change affect evolution {4-3}
    • Tectonic plate movements, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and climate change have shifted wildlife habitats, wiped out large numbers of species, and created opportunities for the evolution of new species
  • Formulate how speciation, extinction, and human activities affect biodiversity {4-4}
    • As environmental conditions change, the balance between the formation of new species and the extinction of existing species determines the Earth's biodiversity
    • Human activities are decreasing biodiversity by causing the extinction of many species and by destroying or degrading habitats needed for the development of new species
  • Define species diversity and relate its importance to an ecosystem {4-5}
    • Species diversity is a major component of biodiversity and tends to increase the sustainability of some ecosystems
  • Analyze the roles that species play in an ecosystem {4-6}
    • Each species plays a specific ecological role called its niche
    • Any given species may play one or more of five important roles - native, nonnative, indicator, keystone, or foundation within a particular ecosystem

I Can Statements for Chapter 10:

  • Analyze the major threats to forest ecosystems {10-1}
    • Forest ecosystems provide ecological services far greater in value than the value of raw materials obtained from forests.
    • Unsustainable cutting and burning of forests, along with diseases and insects, all made worse by projected climate change, are the chief threats to forest ecosystems.
  • Detail how we should manage and sustain forests {10-2}
    • We can sustain forests by emphasizing the economic value of their ecological services, removing government subsidies that hasten their destruction, protecting old-growth forests, harvesting trees no faster than they are replenished, and planting trees.
  • Explain how we should manage and sustain grasslands {10-3}
    • We can sustain the productivity of grasslands by controlling the numbers and distribution of grazing livestock, and by restoring degraded grasslands.
  • Explain how we should manage and sustain parks and nature reserves {10-4}
    • Sustaining biodiversity will require more effective protection of existing parks and nature reserves, as well as the protection of much more of the Earth's remaining undisturbed land area.
  • Analyze the ecosystem approach to sustaining biodiversity {10-5}
    • We can help to sustain terrestrial biodiversity by identifying and protecting severely threatened areas, restoring damaged ecosystems, and sharing with other species much of the land we dominate.
