PERT

The Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (P.E.R.T.) is Florida's customized common placement test.

The purpose of the P.E.R.T. is accurate course placement based on the student's skills and abilities. The P.E.R.T. is aligned with the Postsecondary Readiness Competencies identified by Florida faculty as necessary for success in entry-level college credit coursework. The P.E.R.T. assessment system includes Placement and Diagnostic tests in mathematics, reading and writing.

A few quick notes from the BDS Office of Assessment & Accountability:

PERT - The state no longer provides PERT units to districts. Therefore, we will include the costs in our budget to make sure that you have units for students to take the PERT to meet the Algebra 1 EOC comparative score and for select End-of-course English and Math courses for our Bay District students. Stay on top of your e-mail for updates :)

PERT Overview for 2021-22

Statement’s that all students must agree to prior to taking PERT:

  1. I understand that I may only take THIS subject area PERT test only twice per semester. NO EXCEPTIONS!

  2. I understand that I may NOT be in possession of any electronic device (such as a cell phone, smart watch, tablet, etc.) while taking this test.

  3. I understand that I may obtain my score report and get other placement information from either my high school counselor or assessment coordinator.

  4. I understand that this test must be completed by the end of school day today.

Q: Who needs to take P.E.R.T.?

PERT Math as a comparative score: Those students who have not achieved a passing score on the Alg 1 EOC may attempt the PERT Math. If the student receives a score of 97+ on PERT Math they are eligible to receive a comparative score which replaces the requirement for passing the Alg 1 EOC. This does not remove the requirement of passing the Algebra 1 course.

Remember that earning a PERT score of 97+:

1. earns a comparative (concordant) score for the Alg 1 EOC for those who entered Grade 9 between 2010-11 and 2017-18.

2. does not mean student can CAP Alg 1 course by the 97+ score.

3. does not mean student is "college-ready."

PERT for Dual-enrollment purposes: For all high school students who show interest in taking available dual-enrolled courses, may do so during the Spring window (in May) or may go to GCSC. The only PERT testing outside of the Spring window will be for students attempting to meet the Alg I EOC concordant score.

Q: Who administers the P.E.R.T.?

The P.E.R.T. is administered at a High school by an educator or paraprofessional who has received training. For dual-enrollment purposes, PERT may also administered by college professionals either at the college or high school.

Q: How should I upload my students to college.measuredsuccess so they may test with a username & password?

Schools must complete the Student upload template. If you do not have this template, please contact our office. Once the template is finished, then e-mail our secondary testing clerk, Rose Washington-Wade at least one week prior to your test date. The file must be password-protected.

Q: Is there a limit as to how many times a student may take the P.E.R.T.?

For a brief period, legislation prohibited students from taking the P.E.R.T. no more than twice in their lifetime. Now students may take it more than twice, per subject, if needed.

NOTE: The district (& GCSC) limits students to two attempts per subject area per semester (4 times per year). School coordinators MUST check the BDS Calendar & the GCSC calendar before admitting students to test. If a student needs to re-test to achieve a higher score, the student may NOT test again on the same day. It is recommended to wait at least one week before re-attempting if the student still has an opportunity within the semester. A "re-test" is considered a second attempt.

Q: If a student is ill and needs to leave campus, can he or she continue the P.E.R.T.?

Ideally, no. However, if there is absolutely no way a student can stay and finish the test, the student will be permitted to test again the following day. As always, the student is NOT permitted to keep their username and password nor their scratch paper when they leave the room. Also, students are NOT permitted to discuss test items at any time.

Q: What time of year is the P.E.R.T. administered?

BDS PERT Schedule varies by high school. PERT as an Alg I EOC comparative is typically given within any of the EOC windows. If schools need to upload student information to college.measuredsuccess, please contact the BDS Assessment Office at least two weeks prior to the administration date. Schools will be required to submit a password-protected Microsoft Excel file. Turn-around time is typically 5 business days.

Q: Is the P.E.R.T. administered on a computer or may a student receive a paper copy?

The P.E.R.T. assessment is a computer adaptive test (C.A.T.) with 25 operational items that will be the basis of the student's placement score and five (5) field test items which are designed to continuously enhance the operational test bank.

Paper - based tests are available to those students who have "Paper-based" documented within FOCUS, however, these tests must be ordered via the BDS Assessment Office at least three weeks prior to the administration date and must be picked up and then returned by the School Assessment Coordinator.

Q: Is there a practice test for P.E.R.T.?

At this time, BDS does not provide an online diagnostic tool via the same testing platform (McCann). However, students may be given the P.E.R.T. Study Guide Here. The Study Guide provides 20 sample questions along with an answer key at the back of the book.
