Opportunities to expand existing knowledge and skill sets in the use of computer mapping technologies (2-4 credits)
Basics of Map Design
We’ve all seen maps depicting study regions, input variables, and results of analysis, but have you ever wondered how those were made? This independent study provides a unique opportunity to learn how to use computer mapping software to generate figures of maps for use in scientific research papers and reports. Concepts and technical skills include plotting coordinate values, locating reference information, choosing colors, symbols, and labels, inserting legends, scale bars, north arrows, drawings, and captions, and layout, sizing, and organization of such elements. Examples from the literature and case studies from previous research will be used to address such topics. Students will also have the opportunity to use data from their own research to produce figures as well. Prerequisite: N/A
