The Speech and Debate world, in person and online, is not immune to the ills of the world. We all make decisions about our words and actions daily and can choose to be a positive or negative influence on those around us.
As a member of this team you all carry a privilege and a responsibility to represent our school, our team and yourselves in the best possible way. I believe, that, by and large, you do live up to Our Code of Honor and its expectations for your behavior. We ask each member to sign their agreement every year they participate. Because we are human there may be times when we fall short of our desired behavior and cause harm to persons or property, perhaps unintentionally, perhaps on purpose. It is important to recognize those shortfalls and understand how and why they happened and who/what has been impacted.
This policy is a work product of former and current captains along with me and has the school administration’s approval to codify and provide guardrails for what happens if there is a Code of Honor infraction. It involves a Strike system, paired with reparations that allow the student involved to be restored to “membership in good standing” in all but the most egregious or repetitive situations. Please review the policy - it serves as a check and deterrent to Code infractions…it would be wonderful to never use it!.
