"Names in the Goblet"

Cue No. 10: Names in the Goblet.mp4

Neville has a small musical moment at the beginning of this cue as he deals with what just happened in Defense Against the Dark Arts class. His history with the Cruciatus Curse is still unknown, but accenting this moment with a quiet yet brave theme felt appropriate. After Moody invites Neville for tea, the camera zooms in on a stained glass window as the rain outside makes the figure appear to be crying. A solo flute plays a fragment of Double Trouble, and when the transition starts, a trio of flutes play the theme over Prisoner of Azkaban harpsichord-style accompaniment.

Inside the Great Hall, the Goblet of Fire stands in the center of an enchanted circle. As Cedric Diggory’s friends push him in to enter his name for the tournament, his theme plays in the clarinet over tremolo strings, highlighting both his bravery and hesitation in this moment. Transitional music plays underneath Harry and Ron observing until the Weasley twins enter the hall. A variation on Double Trouble plays over this entire sequence, first appearing in the violas with pizzicato celli and bass underneath. The variation moves to violins as the violas take off with excitement at what the twins are about to do. After Hermione reprimands them, a full version of Double Trouble plays, reminding us that the twins are, in fact, just that.

The music follows the choreography as they jump into the circle. Half of the Triwizard theme plays in the horns, then after a pause, the second half is echoed in the flutes in an almost mocking tone. Practically as soon as the twins’ names go in, the Goblet spits them back out, and throws Fred and George across the room (also choreographed closely in the music). A spell has been put on the twins to make them old, and they start fighting. This comedic moment is scored in the lighter, Prisoner of Azkaban style.

The music calms down and is reduced to low-register pulses. Victor Krum has entered the Great Hall and brings a tone into the room that is the complete opposite of what was just happening. His motif plays as he approaches the Goblet, then again as he gives Hermione an intense look. As a dark shot of the clocktower is shown, the Three-Note motif appears in the harp while the harpsichord simultaneously plays Voldemort 1. Despite the fun that the Hogwarts students are having, evil is still plotting out there somewhere. We then re-enter the Great Hall for the announcement of the Triwizard champions.
