Code of Conduct

The New Librarian Symposium is committed to providing a positive event experience for everyone, regardless of age, sexual orientation, gender orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion, and personal beliefs. The event organizers invite all participants to think critically about how their comments—whether verbal, written, or tweeted—related to age, sexual orientation, gender orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion, and personal beliefs, as well as deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention impact others and align with historically entrenched systems of oppression.

At the same time, we recognize that events are at their best when they operate as critical spaces, within which intellectual engagement with difficult content is sometimes highly productive. To this end, we welcome discussion related to troubling topics, provided it is situated critically and presented in a respectful manner, especially towards historically marginalized communities.

We are seeking to create a positive, harassment–free space for everyone at the New Librarian Symposium. As such, we want to underscore that all presenters, attendees, and organizers have a responsibility—and are expected to exercise that responsibility—for fostering the required conditions for such a space. If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact one of the event organizers immediately in person or by email at newlibsymp@gmail.com. We are committed to addressing such behaviour and will consider measures ranging from private conversations with the individual(s) involved to expulsion from the event.

We expect participants to follow these rules at all event venues and event-related social events. Thank you for your participation in these efforts.

The event organizers are indebted to the members of CAPAL, whose Code of Conduct served as the source document, and Dave Hudson, whose time and insight was instrumental in shaping this Code of Conduct.
