by the BFO Research Committee, 2012

John Dawes was born on 8 March 1830 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. His parents were Thomas Dawes, a "Brewer", and Hannah Chataway, both of Staffordshire. On 5 November 1851, John Dawes, a "Brewer", married Caroline (Carrie) Brough in parish church of St. James, Kingston-Upon-Hull, Yorkshire. She was born on 10 April 1830, in West Ashby, Lincolnshire. Her parents were John Brough, a "Gardener", and Jane (Julia or Judith) Marshall. (John Dawes and Caroline Brough were married in the same church and on the same day as was Caroline's older brother, John Brough--who married Mary Winter Fanthorp.)

Following their marriage, John and Caroline lived in Kingston-Upon-Hull, Yorkshire, where John worked as a "Master Brewer" who employed "two men". Between the 1860's and 1880's, John and Caroline lived in Northamptonshire, Worcestershire, and Staffordshire, where John worked as a "Master Brewer" who employed as many as "eight men".

John and Caroline Dawes were the parents of thirteen children, six boys and seven girls. Two of these children died as infants (within one year of birth), eight other children eventually died in England, and three others immigrated to Utah and are buried in the Vine Bluff Cemetery in Nephi, Utah.

Unfortunately, John Dawes died on 22 August 1888 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire (and was buried on 25 August 1888 in Merridale Cemetery--Grave # 3969--in Wolverhampton), leaving his wife, Caroline, to look after nine surviving children. Following her husband's death, Caroline did not remarry. Finally, in 1899, when she was 69 years old, Caroline immigrated to the United States, where she initially took up residence (in 1900) with her older widowed sister, Harriet Brough Snarr, who was living in Murray, Utah. After Harriet died in 1901, Caroline moved to Nephi, where she resided with her daughter, Anna Dawes--who had married her first cousin, John Henry Brough. Caroline died in Nephi on 15 September 1911 and is buried in the Vine Bluff Cemetery in Nephi, Utah.

The three children of John and Caroline Dawes who left England and eventually settled in Utah, were: Anna Dawes, Caroline Amelia Dawes and Edward Sidney Dawes.

Anna Dawes was born on 24 February 1856 in Littleham, Brideford, Devonshire, and married her first cousin, John Henry Brough on 7 July 1898 in Holy Trinity Church, Scarborough, Yorkshire. John Henry Brough was born on 19 September 1855 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was the son of John Brough and Mary Winter Fanthorp. John Henry Brough served a mission to the British Isles for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) during 1896 to 1898. Anna Dawes was baptized into the LDS Church on 18 June 1898, and then married John Henry Brough less than one month later. It is likely that John Henry Brough visited Anna's family, helped convert her to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and then as a couple they left England for Utah in 1898. John Henry Brough worked as a "Farmer" in Nephi, Utah, and died on 28 November 1913 in Nephi. Anna Dawes died on 6 August 1943 in Nephi. This couple had no children and are both buried in the Vine Bluff Cemetery in Nephi, Utah.

Caroline Amelia Dawes was born on 31 December 1858 in Littleham, Devonshire, immigrated to the United States in 1899, and married William Goble Bird, a widower, on 25 May 1904 in Salt Lake City, Utah. William Goble Bird was born on 4 December 1844 in West Hampnett, Sussex, immigrated to the United States in 1866, worked as a "Farmer" in Nephi, Utah, and died on 10 April 1938 in Nephi. Caroline Amelia Dawes died on 16 February 1954 in the state hospital in Provo, Utah. This couple had no children and are both buried in the Vine Bluff Cemetery in Nephi, Utah.

Edward Sidney Dawes was born on 10 May 1870 in Dudley, Worcestershire, and married Jennie Sarony Leighton on 22 June 1895 in St. Martin, Scarborough, Yorkshire. Jennie Sarony Leighton was born on 17 February 1872 in Osgodby, Cayton, Yorkshire. Edward Sidney Dawes immigrated to the United States in 1899, worked as a "Farm Laborer" in 1900 in Nephi, Utah, and died on 1 December 1905 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Following his death, Jennie Sarony Leighton married Joseph Brough, a first cousin to Edward Sidney Dawes. Jennie Sarony Leighton died on 10 May 1955 in Nephi, Utah. These two couples had no children and all three individuals are buried in the Vine Bluff Cemetery in Nephi, Utah.

Interestingly, the descendants of John Dawes and Caroline (Carrie) Brough who now live in the United States either come through the lineage of Thomas Dawes--the oldest son of John and Caroline Dawes, or through the lineage of Mary Elizabeth Dawes--the oldest daughter of John and Caroline Dawes. Currently, the known descendants of John Dawes and Caroline (Carrie) Brough number over 300 people.

Thomas Dawes was born on 3 August 1852 in Kingston-Upon-Hall, Yorkshire, and died on 14 December 1906 in England. On 4 November 1876, in St. Martin, Scarborough, Yorkshire, Thomas Dawes married a widow, Ida Sarony Leighton, who was a Canadian and the mother of Jennie Sarony Leighton who later married Thomas's younger brother Edward. In the 1880's, Thomas Dawes worked as a "Manager" of a "Photographic Establishment" in Scarborough, Yorkshire. Thomas and Ida Dawes had one child: Ida Nelly (Nellie) Sarony Dawes, who married Valentine Fowler in 1896 in Yorkshire. Between 1897 and 1908, Ida Dawes and Valentine Fowler had five children. They divorced sometime between 1909 and 1912. Unfortunately, during World War I, Valentine Fowler, a Temporary Major in the Alexandra, Prince of Wales Division, Yorkshire Regiment, 10th Battalion, was "killed in action, by shellfire, on Saturday the 2nd of June 1917". Following his death, two of their children--Ida Constance Fowler and Elsa Veronica Fowler--immigrated to the United States. Ida Constance Fowler immigrated to Utah and married Frank Harris in 1921 in Salt Lake City. She died on 28 December 1958 in Nephi, Utah. Elsa Veronica Fowler immigrated to Utah and married Theodore Harris in 1921 in Nephi. She died on 17 June 1980 in Torrance, Los Angeles County, California. Most of the known descendants of Thomas Dawes and Ida Sarony currently reside in California and Utah.

Mary Elizabeth Dawes was born on 29 April 1854 in Aston Juxta, Birmingham, Warwickshire, and died on 7 September 1899 in Manchester, Lancashire. She married Charles Edward Greenland, of Hunslet, Yorkshire, on 20 November 1878 in St. John's, Dudley, Staffordshire. During the 1880's and 1890's, Charles Edward Greenland worked as a "Wine Merchant" in Warwickshire and a "Brewer" in Lancashire; and during this time Charles and Mary had six children. Two of these children--Charles Alfred Greenland and John (Jack) Greenland--eventually immigrated to the United States and settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. Charles Alfred Greenland married Elizabeth Jane Lomax on 26 December 1906 in Salt Lake City. He died on 24 May 1957 in Salt Lake City, Utah. John (Jack) Greenland married Mable Luella Gunderson on 20 December 1905 in Salt Lake City. He died on 12 March 1943 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Most of the known descendants of Mary Elizabeth Dawes and Charles Edward Greenland currently reside in Utah.
