Betty, Bartle, and the Apples ~

This story will be presented Thursday, August 27 at 8:45

Betty and Bartle lived in a farmhouse with their mother, father, big brother, grandmother, and great grandmother just outside of a town called Perry. Towards the end of August, it was their job to gather the apples that had fallen from the tree in the front yard. Their mother had given them a basket to place them in. Betty went to the little tree in the yard to gather the apples on the ground. She took her time to carefully deposit each apple and as she did, she counted each one. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and then 3 more. How many did she have in the basket, I wonder? Then as she picked the basket up to go inside, Bartle, who had climbed the tree, tossed down 2 more ripe red apples. She added them into the basket. Now, how many apples did she have, I wonder? On her way into the house, she noticed Dolly, her beloved farm horse looking longingly over the fence. She could tell he had desires to have some of those juicy apples. Without a second thought, she walked over and placed 2 of the apples on the fence posts. Now, how many does she have left in the basket, I wonder? When she got in the house she placed the apples on the counter and her mama took half of them and pealed them to make applesauce. Now there were just 4 left. What should she make with them? Perhaps Apple Crisp? Only 3 were needed for apple crisp, so her Great Grandmother sliced one in half so the children could see the star inside, and Betty and Bartle had a delicious morning snack.
