PE and Sport

INTENT

At Gislingham Primary, our vision for Physical Education and Sport is that all children should receive high quality Physical Education (PE) lessons as well as having access to a range of extra curricular sport and physical activity opportunities allowing them to become physically competent and confident. Our vision is promoted through the Schools Games values of determination, honesty, passion, respect, self-belief and teamwork. Teaching children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play are essential skills to embed life-long values.

We believe that PE, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential for emotional well being and good mental health as well as physical fitness. Our curriculum aims to improve the well being and fitness of all children at Gislingham Primary not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.

IMPLEMENTATION

PE at Gislingham provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including:

  1. Dance

  2. Gymnastics

  3. Swimming

  4. Strike and field games,

  5. Net and wall games

  6. Invasion games

  7. Outdoor adventure

The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering fundamental skills and developing their techniques. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extracurricular activities. A variety of lunchtime and after school sport clubs are available.

Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.

Each year a group of Year 6 children volunteer to become Sports Leaders for the school. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with lunch-time games and activities, our annual Sports day and any other sporting activities. Children in Years 4, 5 and 6 take part in swimming lessons: Y6 in the Autumn term; Y5 in the Spring term and Y4 in the Summer term. Any Y6 pupils unable to swim are offered additional swimming lessons later in the year.

IMPACT

Throughout lessons, teachers assess the children's skills in order to challenge and support so that each child is able to fulfill their potential.

Children are motivated to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. Between 65 and 85% of pupils regularly take part in extra curricular sports clubs.

From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport so that, hopefully, they grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.

We continue to maintain high quality PE, physical activity and sport in school as evidenced by our Gold Schools Games Mark 2022.
