Non-fiction texts support materials

Confidence in how to read and write non-fiction texts is a vital literacy skill for all students. Non fiction texts are generally organised into the following 6 categories:

  • to persuade
  • to discuss
  • to explain
  • to instruct
  • to recount
  • to inform

These are not only the types of texts students will need to analyse and construct in their KS4 & KS5 exams, they are the types of texts they will meet in everyday life. At St Julian’s School, we use common templates across all subject areas to refer to these texts so that students are able to make clear links and connections.

Students have condensed versions of the templates teachers refer to in their planners.

Below is a document with all of the templates staff use to support non-fiction writing.
